What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that removes tooth stains and brightens discoloration. The most common whitening treatments include either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break up and remove stubborn stains.

While many types of over-the-counter (OTC) whitening strips, toothpastes, and mouth rinses can reduce surface stains, only professional-grade products can address deeper intrinsic stains in the teeth.

How does teeth whitening work?

Most professional whitening solutions contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide and oxygen.

Once applied to the teeth, the active ingredient in the whitening gel (peroxide) penetrates the tooth enamel to reach the stain molecules. The oxygen in the gel then reacts with the stain molecules to break their bond.

By shattering the bond between your teeth and stain molecules, professional teeth whitening can brighten your smile by up to eight shades in a single visit. This is an attractive option for individuals who want whiter teeth in the shortest amount of time.

Are there different types of teeth whitening?

Royal Dental Center offers two main types of teeth whitening:

Chairside whitening

Chairside whitening is an in-office treatment that produces the fastest, most dramatic results. The entire treatment takes about one hour.

After covering your gums and lips with a special barrier, your dentist applies the whitening solution directly to your teeth. Next, they use a curing light to activate the gel and accelerate the whitening process.

At Royal Dental Center, your dentist uses 3M White & Brite™ whitening gel, which comes in various formulations to customize your treatment.

Take-home trays

If you want to whiten your teeth on your own time, take-home trays can brighten your smile gradually. Your dentist creates your custom take-home trays using impressions of your own teeth, so they fit comfortably and work quickly.

Why do my teeth need whitening?

If your teeth no longer look as bright as they once did, you’re not alone. The tooth enamel that protects your teeth gradually erodes as you age. Without a thick layer of enamel, the darker dentin underneath can peek through and cause a yellowish appearance.

Other common causes of yellow teeth include:

  • Coffee and tea
  • Red wine
  • Soy sauce
  • Curry and marinara sauce
  • Certain medications, including antibiotics
  • Chemotherapy
  • Tobacco use (cigarettes, chewing tobacco, etc.)
  • Sugary drinks (soda, fruit juice, etc.)
  • Poor oral hygiene
