What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are a type of orthodontic treatment that uses removable trays to straighten misaligned teeth and correct malocclusions (bite problems). Like conventional braces, clear aligners shift teeth into the correct position by applying gradual force.

However, while braces are fixed to your teeth, bulky, and apparent to the naked eye, clear aligners are completely transparent. The BPA-free, plastic material in clear aligners also molds to the specific shape of your teeth, so they blend in with your smile.

Clear aligners are an especially attractive option for adults and teens seeking orthodontic treatment.

What are the benefits of clear aligners?

Clear aligners are as effective as they are attractive. They can also treat many of the same orthodontic concerns as braces, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Overcrowding

Clear aligners also offers many other advantages over traditional braces, including:

  • More comfortable
  • Less obvious
  • Shorter treatment time
  • No food restrictions

Since clear aligners don't adhere to your teeth like braces do, they are generally easier to clean. You can remove them to eat, brush your teeth, and floss, which typically results in better oral health over braces.

What can I expect from the clear aligners process?

Once you decide that clear aligners are right for you, your dentist at Royal Dental Center can design your individualized treatment plan.

The iTero® intraoral scanner allows your dentist to take impressions of your teeth, without goopy molds, to create your aligners. The lab then fabricates your clear aligners using the individualized plan that your dentist sends.

Every two weeks or so, you receive a new set of clear aligners. You must wear them for at least 22 hours a day to stay on track with your treatment plan. Since clear aligners don't require tightening appointments, you only have to visit your dentist for routine check-ins.

How long your treatment takes typically depends on the severity of your case. Forgetting to wear your aligners as recommended or removing them too frequently can interfere with your treatment. In many cases, treatment with clear aligners can take as little as 6-18 months.
